Creased and Lifted Shingles After a Salt Lake Windstorm: A Step-by-Step Damage Check

A single 58 mph gust can break the sealant strip on asphalt shingles that carry a wind warranty rated to 110 mph. That gap between what a shingle is “rated” for and what actually lifts it in the field trips up a lot of homeowners. The warranty number assumes a perfect install, a full seal, and shingles that have not been baked by years of high-altitude sun. Along the Wasatch Front, a summer microburst rolling off the mountains can hit 60 to 80 mph in a few violent minutes, and that is plenty to peel or crease shingles that looked fine the day before.

The tricky part is that wind damage rarely announces itself. There is no puddle in the hallway the next morning. Instead you get lifted tabs and hairline creases that hold for a while, then let go during the next storm. Here is a step-by-step way to check your roof after a windy Salt Lake afternoon, in the order that actually catches the damage.

Step 1: Do the ground walk first

Start where it is safe: on the ground, walking the full perimeter of the house. You are looking for the obvious stuff that wind scatters.

Check for loose shingle pieces or whole tabs in the yard, in the gutters, and against the fence line. Look for the small, coarse black grit that shingles shed. A gutter full of granules after a windstorm tells you the surface took a beating even where tabs did not tear off. Also scan the ground below valleys and eaves, since those edges catch the most uplift.

Then look up at the roof from a few angles. Wind damage often shows as a row of shingles that sit slightly higher or darker than their neighbors, because the tab has flipped up and exposed the underside. Late-afternoon light and long shadows make these ridges easier to spot.

Step 2: Look for creases, not just missing shingles

The most common wind damage on a Salt Lake roof is not a missing shingle. It is a creased one. When a gust folds a tab back and it snaps down again, it leaves a horizontal crack line across the shingle. The tab stays in place, so from the driveway it looks intact, but that crease is now a hinge that will fail in the next storm.

Creases usually run in clusters on the windward slope, often the south and west faces that catch the strongest downdrafts. If you can safely see a run of shingles with faint horizontal lines a couple inches up from the bottom edge, treat that as damage even though nothing is gone yet. Step 3: Check the seal along the eaves and rakes

The edges of the roof are where wind gets underneath and lifts. Along the eaves (the bottom edge) and the rakes (the side edges), gently feel whether the shingle tabs are still bonded to the course below. A properly sealed tab resists a light pull and springs back. A tab that flaps loose or stays bent up has lost its seal.

Do this only from a stable ladder at the edge, never by climbing onto a wet or steep slope. If more than a tab or two lifts freely along an edge, the wind likely broke the seal across a wider band than you can reach. On older roofs, once the factory adhesive has dried out from UV and heat, one strong storm can unseal an entire windward slope at once.

Step 4: Inspect flashing and penetrations

Wind does not only work on the field of the roof. It pries at anything that sticks up. Look at the metal flashing around the chimney, the step flashing along walls, and the boots around plumbing vents. Wind can bend a flashing leg back or tear the sealant loose, and those spots leak long before a missing shingle does.

Pipe boots are especially worth a look after a storm, because the rubber collar is already the shortest-lived part on most roofs. If a gust lifted a nearby shingle, it may have exposed or torn the boot too. That combination is a quiet, slow leak waiting for the next rain.

Step 5: Check the attic and ceilings inside

Head into the attic with a flashlight in daylight. Look up at the roof deck for any new pinpricks of light, dark water stains on the wood, or damp insulation directly below where you saw damage outside. Then walk the top-floor ceilings and the perimeter of upstairs rooms for fresh discoloration.

A stain the size of a coffee cup that was not there last week is your confirmation that wind damage has already opened a path for water. Photograph anything you find, inside and out, with the date visible on your phone. Those photos matter if this becomes an insurance conversation.

Step 6: Get it documented before the next storm

This is the step homeowners skip and regret. Wind damage compounds. A creased tab that holds through a calm week can strip off in the next gust and take healthy shingles with it. Documenting and repairing while the damage is small keeps a $400 repair from becoming a slope replacement.
