The wind kicks up off the bench on a dry August afternoon, and a maple branch drags back and forth across the ridge of a Millcreek home. Scrape, pause, scrape. From the deck it sounds like nothing. Up on the roof, that same branch has buffed a shiny bald patch into a run of shingles the length of a yardstick, sanding the protective granules clean off. Tree limbs are one of the most underrated wear items on a Salt Lake roof, and the misunderstandings around them run deep. Let’s clear a few up while the weather is still on your side.
Myth 1: “If the branch isn’t touching the shingles, it’s fine”
A limb doesn’t have to rest on the roof to do damage. Wind is the problem. On a gusty valley day, a branch that hangs a foot above the surface can whip down and slap the shingles dozens of times an hour. Each contact knocks loose a little more of the mineral granule layer that shields the asphalt from Utah’s high-altitude UV.
Picture a 30-foot Siberian elm leaning over the garage. A single windstorm off the Wasatch can wear a stripe across two or three courses of shingles. Once an edge lifts, the next wind gets under it.
